The ×7 rule is the most repeated piece of dog trivia there is, and it has no scientific basis. The usual story is that someone divided an average human lifespan by an average dog lifespan and rounded. It stuck because it's easy, not because it's true.
Two things break it. First, dogs do not age at a steady rate. They race through growing up — a one-year-old dog is already physically an adult, roughly equivalent to a human in their mid-teens — and then aging slows down. A flat multiplier can't describe a curve.
Second, size changes everything. Bigger dogs age faster, and nobody is entirely sure why. A Great Dane is often considered a senior by six or seven; a Chihuahua of the same age is barely middle-aged. Any answer that ignores your dog's size is guessing.
So instead of one multiplier, this calculator uses the veterinary size-based method: the first year counts as about 15 human years, the second brings the total to roughly 24, and every year after that adds 4 to 7 human years depending on how big your dog is.

No one can point to a study, because there isn't one. The most credible account is that it came from dividing a typical human lifespan by a typical dog lifespan — roughly 70 divided by 10 — and it spread because it is easy to remember and easy to repeat. It survives as folklore, not as science.
This is one of the genuinely open questions in canine biology. Large breeds grow far more in their first year, and the leading hypothesis is that rapid growth carries a cost — faster cell turnover, earlier onset of age-related disease. What is not in doubt is the pattern itself: across breeds, larger dogs have shorter lifespans and reach old age sooner. That is why this calculator asks for size before it gives you a number.
In 2020, researchers compared DNA methylation — chemical marks on DNA that shift predictably with age — in Labrador Retrievers and humans, and produced the formula 16 × ln(dog's age) + 31. It reads much higher for young dogs: a one-year-old comes out around 31 rather than 15.
Both numbers are defensible because they measure different things. The methylation clock tracks biological maturity at the molecular level, while the size-based method reflects where a dog sits in its own life course. The DNA study was also derived from a single breed, so it does not account for the size effect at all.
There is no fixed birthday. The AAHA framework treats the senior stage as the last quarter of a dog's expected lifespan, which means it arrives at different ages for different dogs — around 6 or 7 for a giant breed, and closer to 11 for a small one. The orange figures in the chart above mark roughly where that line falls.
They are a well-grounded approximation, not a measurement. Individual dogs vary enormously, and breed, body condition and health history all shift the picture. Treat the result as a way to understand roughly where your dog is in life — puppy, adult, senior — rather than as a precise figure. For anything health-related, your vet's assessment beats any chart.
